USPA NEWS - A suburb north of Chicago Illinois passes a bill to create a fund for reparations for African Americans by taxing legal Marijuana sales. This maybe a model for other urban cities.
Alderman Robin Rue Simmons and her constituents in Evanston Illinois unanimously passed a bill 8-1 for levying a 3% tax on Marijuana sales to create a reparations fund for descendants of slaves that can meet residency requirements. This measure was facilitated to address some of the wrongs and mistreatment that African Americans have suffered through out the years.Evanston is a suburb that is about 12 miles north of Chicago. Some sources have stipulated that over 70% of arrests for Marijuana possession were that of African American residents. Also the black population there has declined in recent years.City officials contend that the fund would help provide training and skills and also could provide financial assistance, and possibly provide small business startups. The whole issue of reparations in North America has been a heated debate for a long time and some view the idea as unpopular and may create division in the country.Others embrace the idea whole heartily. The city of Evanston could be setting a positive example for other municipalities across the country if this idea becomes successful.
