USPA NEWS - French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said, he had recalled the two ambassadors Philippe Etienne from Washington (U.S.A) and Jean-Pierre Thebault from Canberra (AUSTRALIA) for consultation at the request of the French President Emmanuel Macron, considering the « exceptional seriousness » mentioned by Mr Le Drian in response to the recently announced national strategic security trilateral partnership of the USA, with the UK and Australia in the Indo Pacific. This has led to the abandonment of the ocean-class submarine project/contract that had linked Australia to France since 2016, which was not appreciated by France feeling "being betrayed."

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said, he had recalled Philippe Etienne from Washington and Jean-Pierre Thebault from Canberra for consultation at the request of the French President Emmanuel Macron, considering the « exceptional gravity » mentioned by Mr Le Drian in response to the recently announced national strategic security trilateral partnership grouping the USA, the UK and Australia in the Indo Pacific. Mr Jean-Yves Le Drian who also consider the two allies countries, France and the USA, are going through an  unprecedented diplomatic crisis (since 2003, during the Golf War). The news was broken over a statement released on Friday evening at 9.34 pm, Paris Time, by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In the press release, which we publish in its entirety, refers to the "exceptional gravity" of the announcement of the strategic partnership between the States of America, UK and Australia. French Foreign Affairs Minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian, had expressed his anger, « I am angry and bitter » over what he considers a « stab in the back » by the Australian withdraw from the contract of conventional submarines, signed in 2016.“It was a stab in the back. We had established a relationship of trust with Australia. This trust has been betrayed,” Le Drian told radio station Franceinfo Thursday morning. STATEMENT RELEASED BY FOREIGN MINISTER JEAN YVES LE DRIAN------------------------------- « At the request of the President of the Republic, I decided to immediately recall to Paris for consultations with our two ambassadors in the United States and in Australia. This exceptional decision is justified by the exceptional gravity of the announcements made on September 15 by Australia and the United States. The abandonment of the ocean-class submarine project that had linked Australia to France since 2016, and the announcement of a new partnership with the United States aimed at launching studies on possible future cooperation on sub -nuclear-powered sailors constitute unacceptable behavior between allies and partners, the consequences of which affect the very conception that we have of our alliances, of our partnerships and of the importance of the Indo-Pacific for Europe. » Source : French Ministry of Foreign Affairs
