The Spanish Monarchy has a reputation for austere and its members, paid less than their peers in other European royal houses. Now, King Philip VI of Spain has gone further and has lowered the salary by 20%, doing the same with the Queen and other members of the Royal Family.
Philip VI charged 234,204 euros gross this year, 20% less than it had awarded the post in 2014. His father, the retired King Juan Carlos I, receive 80% of what comes his son, ie 187,356 euros. Both charge more than the Queen Letizia, who will receive a cash prize of 128,808 euros. The Reina SofÃa receive 105,396 euros gross. The budget of the Royal House this year, which does not suffer variations from 2014, amounting to 7,775,040 euros which is awarded to him in the State Budget prepared by the Government and approved by Parliament.
Overall, the budget of the Royal House this year fell by 6.10%. Most of the budget -49% of the total- is for staff. Another 38% goes to the purchase and maintenance of goods and services. The budget for official travel of the Royal Family is low more than 50% from 300,000 euros in 2014 to 130,000 euros this year. The budget reduction is in line with recent years: in 2011 fell 5.20%; in 2012, 2%; in 2013, 4% and last year, 2%. With this, the Spanish royal family wanted to approach the economic reality of the Spaniards in years in which the economic crisis has hit citizens. The result of this is the high value that King Philip VI receives from the Spaniards, well above the political and consistent with other institutions like the Army.
